Privacy Policy

We collect the information you choose to send us through the forms on this site, plus basic technical information about how you use the site. We do not sell, trade, or share it with data center developers. If you want us to delete something you sent us, ask and we will. Email updates. If you sign up for updates, we collect your email address. Mailchimp, our email provider, handles signups and stores your address in their system rather than on this website. Mailchimp's own privacy policy governs what they do with it. Forms. Several forms on this site send information to our team for review:

Submit a Project asks for the project name, county, city, status, and optionally the developer, address, capacity, acreage, notes, a source link, and your name and email.

Add Your Group asks for the group name, community, county, and optionally a website, group email, phone number, description, focus, and your name and email.

Get Help or Support asks for your name, email, county, and message, and optionally your community and the project involved.

Share Your Story asks for your county and your story, and optionally your name, email, community, and a photo.

Volunteer asks for your name and email, and optionally the roles you are interested in, a description of your expertise, and a message.

What you send through these forms is stored in this site's private admin area, where our team can read it, discuss it internally, and follow up with you. Photos submitted with a story are stored on this site's server.

Donations are processed by Givebutter. You enter your payment details into Givebutter's own form, which appears on our pages inside a frame belonging to them. Payment card details never reach this website and we never see or store them. What we receive from Givebutter is the donor information they pass on to us, such as your name, email address, and the amount you gave.
Server logs. Our web server records ordinary request information, including your IP address, the pages you request, the time, and your browser type. These logs exist for security and troubleshooting.

Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used in aggregate, such as which pages are visited and how people arrive. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives your IP address. We use it to make the site more useful, not to identify individual visitors. You can opt out for all sites using Google's browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Cookies and browser storage. This site sets a session cookie and a security token cookie, both needed for forms to work. Google Analytics sets its own cookies as described above. The site also uses your browser's local storage to remember that you have already seen or dismissed the email signup popup, so it does not keep reappearing. That information stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
Some parts of this site are served by other companies, which means your browser contacts them directly and they can see your IP address:

Google Fonts, for the typefaces used across the site.
Givebutter, for the donation form.
Our map tile provider, for the base map on the map page.
YouTube and Vimeo, for town hall video thumbnails and playback. Videos are click to play, and we use YouTube's no-cookie player.
Mailchimp, when you submit the email signup form.
Gooogle Analytics, as described above.
Each of these companies has its own privacy policy governing what it collects.
To reply to you, and to follow up on a project, a group, a story, a request for help, or an offer to volunteer.
To maintain the project map and the directories of community groups and organizations.
To send you updates, if you asked for them.
To understand how the site is being used so we can improve it.
Information about data center projects, community groups, and organizations is published on this site after our team reviews it.

Your own contact details are not published. When you submit a project or a group, the name and email you give us as the submitter stay internal. A group or organization can list a public contact address, but only one the group itself has asked us to show.

Stories and photos are not published without asking you first. The submission form says so, and that is a commitment, not a formality. Public display of submitted stories is something we are planning, and we will contact you before yours appears anywhere.

Requests for help and volunteer signups are never published.
We do not sell or rent your information.
We do not share it with data center developers, their consultants, or their lobbyists.
We do not run advertising on this site, and we do not share your information with advertising networks.

We may share information where we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect someone's safety.
Form submissions are kept in our admin area for as long as they are useful to the organizing work, and our internal record of a submission is kept after it has been reviewed. Email signups are kept until you unsubscribe. Ask us to delete something you sent and we will remove it.
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to us at the address below.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can opt out of Google Analytics using the link above. Blocking cookies may stop the forms on this site from working.

This site is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us something, contact us and we will delete it.

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page.
